Downtown Luray is five minutes, the famous caverns about ten, and the Thornton Gap gateway to Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive around fifteen. The Shenandoah River, Old Rag, and Massanutten round out the week.
Luray Caverns
The East Coast's largest cavern system — towering stone formations, mirror-still pools, and the one-of-a-kind Stalacpipe Organ carved into the rock. The main tour runs about a mile and a half and takes most visitors under an hour.
Shenandoah National Park
The Thornton Gap entrance is a short drive up US-211, where you pick up Skyline Drive — 105 miles of Blue Ridge crest with more than 75 overlooks. Good for a scenic morning drive or a full day on the park's 500+ miles of trails.
Shenandoah River
The South Fork of the Shenandoah winds right past Luray. Local outfitters run canoe, kayak, and tube trips with a shuttle, so you don't need your own gear — and it's a favorite spot for a lazy afternoon of fishing.
Downtown Luray
Luray's historic Main Street is a walkable afternoon of locally-owned shops, coffee, and ice cream, with easy dinners in town. The natural low-key stop after a day at the caverns or in the park.
Old Rag Mountain
Shenandoah's signature hike — a roughly 9-mile loop with a granite rock scramble near the summit and 360-degree Blue Ridge views. It's the park's most popular trail; a $2 day-use ticket booked ahead on Recreation.gov is required March through November.
Massanutten Resort
A four-season mountain resort — skiing and snow tubing in winter, an indoor/outdoor water park, and two golf courses the rest of the year. Worth the drive when the group wants a change of pace from caves and trails.
